Event Calendar Admin's Manual

4. Managing Categories

4.3. Managing Categories

This screen is constitued mainly of an html table with several column.

Categories Editor

From here, you may see, create, edit, or delete any Category in this Category Group.

  • Delete
The checkboxes in this column allow you to delete existing Categories. Check the box of the Categories you want to delete, and click on Delete Checked. You'll be prompted to confirm.
  • Position
The Category's position defines where it will be displayed in list boxes or popup menus that show that Category Group. Category positions are unique (that is you cannot have two Categories with the same position in a Category Group).
  • Name
The Category name will be displayed in popup menu or list boxes where this Category Group will be displayed. Also, it may be displayed in Calendar or Event views, depending on the macros you call from their templates (see Setting-up a Calendar).
  • Color
The categories from your first Category Groups (Priority, by default) will be displayed in calendar views as colored backgrounds. This is where you choose the color. You can use hexadecimal RGB values (including the pound '#'), or standard color names.
  • Text
When the background color above is displayed, you may have to change the color of the text that will be displayed over it. Enter here the color to use, in hexadecimal RGB values, or using the standard color name.
  • Prev.
This preview lets you control how the color and the text color work together.
  • Icon
Every Category not in the first Category Group will be displayed in calendar views as icon. This icon is defined here. You may use a resource name (as most categories in the Type Category Group), a complete image tag (including any attribute), or the url of the icon (this is not recommended as the image tag will be built without width and height attributes).
  • (icon preview)This preview lets you control the validity of your icon value. If after you added an icon and saved the changes you don't see your icon there, check the value you entered in the icon field.
  • ID
This column will be displayed when you check the "Display Category Identifiers" checkbox and click on "Set Display". It shows the unique identifier of each Category. This identifier is defined when the category is created, and it cannot be changed. It allows you to change the name or the icon of your categories in their group without breaking the existing events (they'll just show the new category name or icon).
Notes:
  • The Category whose ID is "0000000" cannot be deleted. The messages which weren't given a category in a group will in fact have this "none" category. You can rename it to what you want, but this behavior will never change, and the category "0000000" will always be the "none" category in its group.
  • Warning: If you delete a Category that was used by some events, these events won't be updated. And since the categories are used by the system to search the events to display, these events would no longer be visible in Calendar Views. So before deleting a category, make sure you've changed the category of the events you don't want to loose.
  • The different possible actions in this form are separate. For example if you want to create a new category, you have to click on Add, and the changes you may have done in existing categories would then be ignored. Similarly, if you check the delete checkbox of a category and click on Save Changes, the category won't be deleted.
